Leyte Samar Daily Express: “Paolo Baylon: the Pride of the Waray-Waray Region!”

by Chito de la Torre of Leyte Samar Daily Express

Leo Paolo Miguel M. Baylon (AdMU BS Ps '10)

Not long ago, he was a scholar of the Philippine Science High School. Lately, QN learned that Leo Paolo Miguel M. Baylon graduated cum laude at the Ateneo de Manila University with the degree of Bachelor of Science in Physics. He is the son of Leo Baylon and Cora Macamay. This young Taclobanon has earned and enjoyed four full scholarships while studying at the Ateneo, namely: Ateneo College Scholarship, Dr. Antonio A. Ferrer Scholarship, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) Global Foundation Scholarship, and Nicolas & Luz Zafra Scholarship. Leo Paolo Miguel is also a recipient of a very special award for having ended as among the top six finalists of the “Best Project of the Year” Awards 2010 of the Bank of the Philippine Islands and Department of Science and Technology, which favored his 44-page March 2010 thesis entitled “Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS)-Derived Aerosol Optical Thickness and Ground-Measured PM2.5 and PM10 Concentrations In Manila Observatory: Observations And Analysis”. For the 16th Founding Anniversary of the PSHS-Eastern Visayas Campus last July 8-9, campus director Pedrito G. Padilla invited this “future physicist” as guest speaker and awardee. The theme for that occasion had been: “PISAY @ 16: Empowering Global Competitiveness Through Excellence in Scientific Research”. Today, he is on foreign soil. The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics, in Trieste, Italy offered him a Diploma Programme for 12 months, commencing last September 2010. Centre assistant director and head happily informed him that he has been selected to participate in the “2010-11 Diploma Course in Earth System Physics”. The Centre offered him a “scholarship of EURO 800.00 – monthly” during his stint as scholar. It also covered his ticket expenses and automatically enroled him in a health insurance scheme.

Leo and Cora are very proud of their son, the “future physicist” of Region VIII, the region of the Waray.

Congrats, Leo Paolo Miguel
