WHEN the legend becomes fact, print the legend.

The legend is that Pinoy rock emerged, fully-formed, from Joey “Pepe” Smith’s lysergic acid-enhanced cortex on the night of Dec. 5, 1972, when the Juan de la Cruz Band Mark III performed “Himig Natin” for the very first time at the Manila Observatory. The ink was barely dry on the lyric sheet since he had just written the words to what was to become Pinoy rock’s enduring anthem in the ladies’ room, minutes before the band was to go onstage.

The truth, however, may be a little more complex than the legend. (Read the rest here.)
