Message of SPP President Dr. Raphael Guerrero for the 30th SPP Physics Congress

SPP President Dr. Raphael Guerrero and First Vice-President Dr. May Lim

My warmest greetings to the participants of the 30th National Physics Congress.

This year, the Samahan acknowledges the important role physics has played in the development of medical technology.  The first Nobel Prize ever awarded was for the discovery of x-rays, a type of radiation that revolutionized medicine. We’ve come a long way since Roentgen and our plenary talks will discuss recent trends in medical physics.

The Samahan is very fortunate to have the De La Salle Health Sciences Institute as our host for this year’s congress.  With its excellent track record in producing medical professionals, DLSHSI is a most appropriate venue for discussing our theme of “Exploring Physics Research in the Health Sciences.”  Improving medical services available to Filipinos is a valid research goal and an intersection between physics and health science in the Philippines could be a major component of this important endeavor.

Our annual congress is the premiere meeting of physicists in the country.  I hope we make the most of the next three days in this beautiful campus.  May we all learn from our peers, share what we’ve discovered, catch up with old friends, and make new ones.

As my term of office ends, I would like to take this opportunity to thank SPP’s active officers and members for continuing to support the Samahan.  I consider it a privilege to have served our physics community.

(With that said, I am also looking forward to attending an SPP Physics congress I did not help organize!)

I wish everyone a productive congress and an even stronger Samahan.

Raphael A. Guerrero, Ph.D.

President, Samahang Pisika ng Pilipinas
