Programs

The Department of Physics of the Ateneo de Manila University School of Science and Engineering is a community of scientists and scholars committed to the service of the nation through the Ignatian tradition of excellence in teaching and research. As a Center of Excellence of the Commission of Higher Education (COE-CHEd), the Physics Department has the responsibility to help promote a higher quality of education in the Philippines.

The course work of our degree programs in the graduate and undergraduate is designed to reflect the current research areas of the department, namely Environmental Physics, Photonics and Materials Science. This allows students to specialize in their field of interest through their graduate courses and to participate in the local and international development of physics.

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS

BS Physics

This 4-year program produces graduates equipped with a thorough understanding of the practical and experimental principles of Physics as well as a detailed appreciation of the theoretical framework of these principles. Practical skills are developed with courses such as: computer aided design, introduction to computing, and engineering workshops practices. A detailed understanding of Physical principles is developed through rigorous coursework, laboratory instructions and student project culminating in a thesis.

BS Applied Physics – Applied Computer Systems
(5-year double degree program)

This 5-year doubled-degree ladder program produces graduates equipped with a working knowledge of physics and computer hardware. Upon completion of the 4-year BS Applied Computer Systems (BS ACS) degree taken with the ECCE department. The fifth year enhances their knowledge of areas such as communications, computer interface design, and operating systems. This course was formerly known as BS Computer Engineering.

BS Physics / BS Materials Science and Engineering
(5-year double degree program)

The BS Physics/BS Materials Science and Engineering (BS MSE) program is a 5- year double degree program where the student obtains a BS Physics degree after four years and a BS MSE after the fifth year. The BS Physics program provides a strong foundation on the physics of materials with specialized electives on materials. BS MSE integrates the knowledge and tools of chemistry and physics with engineering principles to design, fabricate and characterize improved and novel materials such as polymer composites, biodegradable plastics and biocompatible materials, longer-lasting paints and coatings and corrosion-resistant materials, and many others.

GRADUATE PROGRAMS

Master of Science in Physics

The Master of Science in Physics is open to students who wish to pursue careers in Physics research and education or in applied areas in the industry. The program is designed to strengthen the students� understanding of the concepts in Physics and its applications. The course work for this program reflects the current research areas of the department, namely Environmental Physics, Photonics, and Materials Science. Under the guidance of their advisers, students have the opportunity to specialize in their field of interest through their subjects and research. The M.S. Physics program consists of 27 units of course work and 6 units of thesis research and writing.

Master of Physics Education

Geared to provide a thorough background in physics, develop teaching skills and promote participation in physics education. For more than a decade, this is formerly known as the Master of Science in Teaching Physics. However, this has been changed due to the significant developments in the field of physics and physics education. The change of the degree program from the M.S. in Teaching Physics to the Master of Physics Education with an updated curriculum reflects a new approach in physics education. The course work for this program is designed to provide graduate students, in particular DECS/ACED scholars, physics courses as well as some education courses. This allows them to have a stronger background in physics, develop their teaching skills and participate in the local and international development of physics education.

Straight BS/MS Physics
(5-year program)

A 5-year course. Undergraduate courses are covered in the 1st 4 years and graduate courses in the 5th year. Outstanding undergraduate students are invited to pursue their graduate studies (M.S. in Physics) for one year upon their graduation.

Doctor of Philosophy in Physics

The Doctor of Philosophy in Physics is open to students who wish to pursue careers in physics research and education or in applied in the industry. The program is designed to strengthen the students’ understanding of the concepts in Physics and its applications and to develop outstanding academic and industrial researchers. The course work for this program reflects the current research areas of the department, namely Environmental Physics, Photonics, and Material Science. Under the guidance of their advisers, students have the opportunity to specialize in their field of interest through their courses and research. The Ph.D. in Physics program consists of 48 units of course work and 12 units of dissertation research and writing
